Disneyland's VERY FIRST Souvenir Book

PB260003.JPG (106603 bytes)

Click any image for a better view
"The Story of Disneyland" was published in 1955 before Disneyland opened in July.  This is the only Disneyland guide that features artists renderings of the all attractions; photographs couldn't be taken because the park was still under construction during publication!  The most desirable of all Disneyland guides. Booklet is in fine condition except for tape stains inside back cover from display in a scrapbook (which preserved the rest of the book in superior condition).  A terrific documentation of the original, 1955 Magic Kingdom.  22 pages.
 In good condition.
Item # 5056F, $99

P5140128.JPG (169418 bytes) 1954 Disneyland Promotional Mini-Poster
Click any image for a better view

The opening of Disneyland was preceded earlier by the ABC TV show, "Disneyland."  "Disneyland" was Walt Disney's first regular weekly television show, and this 17 " x 11" mini poster was sent to advertisers and TV stations to build excitement for the show and the park.  The poster promotes Disneyland park as a "160 acre Magic Kingdom created as a place for people to find happiness and knowledge."  It promotes the TV show as a weekly TV event "Featuring four fabulous realms of entertainment."  These realms would include Frontierland, Adventureland, Fantasyland, and Tomorrowland- just like the park's first four lands.  This 1954 publication features a graphic of Peter Ellenshaw's painting of the park (thanks to our friend Bradley Finberg for this information).  The publication is folded once horizontally, and has three vertical folds.  Top corners are missing paper from being thumb-tacked.  A very rare Disneyland item.  Item # 4056, $139.95

In Disneyland's earlier years, a couple key attractions offered special keepsake tickets with fancy graphics.  These attractions included the Disneyland Railroad and the Mark Twain Riverboat.  This ticket would have been purchased directly from the Ticket booth at the Rivers of America in Frontierland, most likely during the 1960's or 1970's.  Measures approx. 4.75" X 2.5".  Ticket has one rough edge where the stub was torn off upon boarding the boat.  Item # 1745, $19.95

If you didn't see this handsome medallion for sale on a recent trip to Walt Disney World, it's because it wasn't for sale!  This is a cast member exclusive medallion- larger and several times thicker than a silver dollar (more like an Olympic medal at a 2.5" across!) that was given to WDW cast members (employees) in the fall of 2001 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Walt Disney's birth.  Those of you who have purchased 1950's/1960's-era Walt Disney cursive autographs from me will recognize Walt's familiar autograph signature in the lower right portion of the front of the medal.  A really impressive piece.  I have only a couple of these.  Item # 1201, $49.95 SALE $39.95

To commemorate Disneyland's Golden Anniversary, Carlene Thie has released HOMECOMING DESTINATION DISNEYLAND, a collection of vintage photographs by her grandfather, veteran news photographer Mell Kilpatrick.  The book is also a great read- filled with great Disneyland remembrances from a host of celebrities:  Art Linkletter, actors Fess Parker, Dean Jones, Tim Conway, Don Knotts, and Wally Boag, artist Brian McKim, director Richard Fleischer, illusionist Teller (of Penn & Teller), Matt McKim, and Sam McKim, Walt Disney's secretary Lucille Martin, former Disneyland president Jack Lindquist, Disney creative director David Pacheco, animators Ollie Johnston (the last of Walt's nine old men) and Ron Dias, Floyd Norman, Willie Ito, voice talents Lisa Davis, Ilene Woods, and Mouseketeer Tommy Cole.

On July 10, 2005, just a week before Disneyland's 50th anniversary,
the book was personally signed by eight Disney luminaries:

Jack Lindquist, former Disneyland President
Ron Dominguez, former Executive Vice President of Disneyland
Beverly Gracey, wife of the late Disneyland Imagineer Yale Gracey
Brian Mc Kim and Matt McKim, sons of the late Imagineer Sam McKim
Willie Ito, Disney artist
Carlene Thie, author
Keith Murdoch, Former city manager who
helped Walt bring Disneyland to Anaheim
